You will be working on one of the lab machines, which have been set up to run the Linux operating system (a version of Unix for the PC). For future reference, you may also wish to read about connecting to aurora from a PC running Windows, but you won't need that for today or any of the labs.

  1. Restart the computer if it is running Windows.
  2. A screen will appear giving the choice between Windows and Linux. Select Linux and continue.
  3. When the login window appears, enter your cs212a-xx account and password.
  4. After a few seconds the Linux desktop will appear. Click on the red hat icon to bring up a menu of programs. Select Terminal under System Tools to create a terminal window. You may enter Unix commands in this window. For example, to start the file editor type "emacs" & at the prompt. (Including the quotes opens emacs in its own window with mouse-enabled menus, and the ampersand runs it in the background.)
  5. The globe icon brings up a web browser.
  6. That should be enough to get you started. Happy computing! When you're through, you can log out using the red hat icon menu at the bottom left of the screen.
