- Presentation of teams and
choices of projects.
- "Special topic" options:
- Oracle: embedded SQL, web access, other.
- Hot topics in Databases. Start from Ch. 23 in the textbook,
reading about one the following topics;
- Networkde databases (23.2): www, integrated access to
multiple data sources, mobility and databases.
- Main memory databases (23.3)
- Information visualization (23.4)
- Domain specific databases (23.5): GIS, Temporal and sequence
databases, image and video databases, information retrieval and
text databases.
What to do:
- Choose the topic, read the small paragraph in the book.
- Starting from the bibliographical notes at the end of the
chapter, trace down a few recent papers on that topic. Look them
up in the library (may be at UMass, perhaps not at Smith), or on
the web: recently, almost all academics put their papers on the
web.
- Choose a paper on that topic to read and present. It need not
be highly technical (if it is, and that intimidates you, look for
an alternative and discuss it with me).
- The presentation is about the general topic AND the paper,
with as much supporting material as you could find.
Deadlines:
- Choice of the special topic, by Nov. 12 (emailed to
Ileana, to 330a account). These topics and the presentations
are individual, not team - but a team can choose to do several
smaller topics related to the main project.
- Presentation of the special topic: week of Nov. 30- Dec 2. 10
minutes each, in class. Sign up for a time slot, by Tu Nov 23
(before Thanksgiving), email to Ileana at class account. If you
do not choose a time slot early enough, it will be assigned to
you, and emailed to you by Nov. 26.
- If time allows, start: File organization. Indexes (if not,
start on Tuesday).
