Travel information

Northampton is located in Western Massachusetts, about 45 min North of Hartford, 2 hours West of Boston, 3 hours North of New York City and 5 hrs South of Montreal. The closest airport is in Hartford (45 min drive), but Albany (1:15 hrs drive) or Boston (2hrs drive) are also viable options. It is probably more convenient to rent a car than to take the airport shuttle, but check the link below for further advice.

Directions to Smith

Driving, flying, taking a shuttle or by train

Parking

We recommend that you book a room at one of the hotels within walking distance (Autumn Inn or Hotel Northampton) and leave the car in their parking lot. If you still decide to drive to campus, check the Parking link for specific instructions as we get closer to the day of the Workshop. On Friday, we anticipate that it will be difficult to find a spot in the Parking Garage or in a nearby lot, but not if you arrive early. The parking lot near the Stables will have sufficient space. On Saturday and Sunday, we do not expect any problem with parking.

Local bus transportation in the Pioneer Valley

Northampton is pretty walkable, but the PVTA offers bus service in Northampton and between Northampton and surrounding areas. Northampton routes are 38--44. (B43 is the most common route to Amherst along Route 9.) There is also the 5-college bus (main bus station is in front of John Greene Hall on Elm Street, near the Campus Center). It runs between the 5 colleges (UMass, Amherst College, MyHolyoke College, Smith College and Hampshire College). It takes Route 9 and may be useful if you stay in a hotel along Route 9 (Northampton-Amherst).
