Pantographs

An applet of a Pantograph -This link gives an interactive illistration on how a Pantograph works. You can use the pantograph in the applet and get the feel of what goes on when using one.

The Turk -The story of The Turk, an automaton that could play chess, took place long ago when it seemed impossible to have an automaton that could play chess. The Turk went on to beat many people and became famous. It turned out that there was actually a person inside the automaton that played the games of chess. This link shows how the person inside could pick up the chess pieces and move them.

Thomas Jefferson -Thomas Jefferson was well known for making copies of the letters he wrote by using a pantograph, or in this case a polygraph. The polygraph was based upon the ideal of a pantograph and was one of the first ways to make copies of a document. This shows the exact polygraph Jefferson used and gives its history.

How does a pantograph fit into my life?
Below are some links that show that a pantograph can be used in many different ways. Now, due to technology a pantograph can scale a drawing or help create a robot.

Trains -Pantographs have been used in many different aspects of technology. The electric train contains a pantograph where it connects to the source of its power. This shows some pictures of the electric trains and it is easy to notice where the pantographs are.

Electric Trains and their connection to Pantographs -This link tells the connection between the electric trains and pantographs. It shows the different ways of collecting the electricity and why pantographs are used.

More Train Images -This shows more images of Pantographs with electric trains.

History and Carousels -Believe it or not, carousels also use pantographs. The pantograph helped reduce the cost of carousels by allowing the makers to carve several heads of the horse at once. It then developed into where the bodies were able to be made with a pantograph.

Robots and Pantographs -In this link you will find how pantographs are used to develope robots. A pantograph is used in the leg configuration. There are figures that show how a pantograph would actually work as a leg.

MATHEMATICS

Varieties of Pantographs -Pantographs can accomplish many different tasks. This link shows the different types and their functions.

The math behind the pantograph. -This link gives different models to play with, showing the different ways a pantograph could work.

Computer Simulation of Pantograph System -Shows the dynamics of a pantograph and its use in electric trains.

IMAGES

The image of the clothes rack has a pantograph in it. You can see that the image on the right, the pantograph, is similar to the clothes rack.

Above, you can see the pantographs in the arms of the different milling and engraving machines. More machines that use pantographs are at Maneklal Exports .

Lamps also have pantographs in them. In this picture you can see the pantograph where the lamp bends.

Hoberman Spheres -The two pictures above show some the architectural buildings that Hoberman created using his spheres. This link will show other architectural projects that Hoberman created. It also includes the Hoberman Sphere which is enjoyed by children and adults alike.
