Week One

This week started off with the setting up of the three dimensional printer. The two technicians were very helpful in explaining what to do and how to operate the system. We printed out two hands which took a little over an hour to print out.

The next day we started learning the new program alias. This program lets us render three dimensional objects on the computer. I was able to create a temple using the preset objects. My next goal is to make the temple more detailed. To make it more detailed I will be learning how to create and control curves in alias.

Joe asked us to create borromean ring in the new software. We started out with ellipses which were object we could just insert. After we accomplished this task with the ellipses we set out to do the same thing with squares. This proved to be more difficult because there where no squares. At first I tried to solve this problem by creating squares from curves but then Joe suggested that I subtract the middle out of a cube. After a little time I was able to do just that and had my squares; once the squares were finished I was able to fit them together in no time.

Once all the objects were complete we wanted to print them out. We ran into a little problem; we couldn't’t convert the wire files to stl files. I worked on the problem for a bit but Joe solved it and we were ready to print. We printed out our five objects, two with supports and three without. The two of our objects came out fine while the others had a variety of problems. We are not discouraged this is all a learning process.
