Summer Internship 2005
Week Four

I wasn’t in on Monday because I attended my little brother’s graduation. I returned on Tuesday and finished depowdering the universal joints that were printed on Friday. Both of the universal joints don’t work because the balls were too big. I have fixed this problem but I’m not sure if the balls are now too small. It will take a few more prints to get the right size. I was also given the task of finding information on curve origami.

While looking for curve or geometric origami online I repeatedly found the page that Joe printed some pictures from. I also found some other pages that are quite interesting:

I continued to search for information on Wednesday and I finished making alterations to the universal joint so they would be prepared for the reprint on Friday. It is really tricky to know exactly how much space is needed to get clearance but not making the ball to loose. I also looked at PovRay and will be studying how to create better images.

Thursday I made a few alterations to the universal joint. We were able to get a fan for the room, so that we won’t die. I read thought the PovRay Users help and it is very interesting. I want to try and make a more interactive way of teaching this so that more people could use it. I would also like to make a movie. Hopefully I can accomplish all this before the summer is over.

I’ve made some headway in PovRay. I can now render simple scenes and I’ll be trying more complex scenes. This software is great. It allows you mix technology with art seamlessly. I want to put the pictures I’ve created on my web page but I can’t get the renders in the right format. In the next few days I want to fix this problem so my art can be seen by the world. I would also like to create more images of the universal joint. I believe trying to create a beautiful image of something helps you to think of it in different way which helps with the design process.

Joe wants me to make the universal joints at the ends of rods and interlock the rods. This sound easy but it isn’t. I realized I had to make the cup that holds the ball thicker so that the beam that came out of it would be more securely attached to the cup. This design is going to require a lot of tries but it will be interesting watching it be treated after it is created.
